Four amateur golfers with handicap indexes under 10.0 played Torrey Pines this weekend to see if they could break 100. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson both said that there was no way a 10 handicap could have broken 100 at Oakmont last year and Golf Digest put it to the test.
Tony Romo (2.2) shot an 84, Justin Timberlake (6.0) shot 98, and Matt Lauer (6.2 shot 100). The fourth player in the group was John Atkinson who was chosen at random out of 60,000 applicant to play the course shot a 114.
The three celebrities are used to being under the lights, cameras, and having a ton of people watching them perform on a daily basis, but can you imagine the pressure that this environment puts on you typical weekend golfer. I am sure Mr. Atkinson could head out to his club today and post a 80 without blinking but under the pressure he could only manage a +43.
This experiment should give us all some perspective on how good the tour pros really are. Romo at a 2 handicap would be one of the best players at your club and he posted a +13. Tiger and Phil might not eat the course up but I am sure they would be pissed if they shot anything higher than 71.
